Open music links from WhatsApp and Telegram in your own player

Short answer

Messengers simply pass a tapped link on to the phone – and that's where SongFlip steps in. Android – once SongFlip is set as the app for music links, every song link in WhatsApp or Telegram opens in your player with 0 taps. iPhone – long-press the link, share it to SongFlip (1 tap). Telegram's in-app browser can get in the way; how to switch it off is explained below.

What actually happens when you tap a link in a chat

WhatsApp and Telegram don't know anything about music services. When you tap a link, the messenger either hands it to the operating system, which picks the app registered for that address, or opens it in its own built-in browser. In a mixed group chat this means: the Apple Music link from one friend opens a web page asking you to sign in, the Spotify link from another wants an app you don't use.

SongFlip hooks into the first route – the system handover. It doesn't need access to your chats and no accessibility permission; it only sees the link you tap.

Android: every chat link straight into your player

  1. Install SongFlip from Google Play and choose your player.
  2. In Settings → Apps → SongFlip → Open by default, tap Add links and tick the services your friends send you – e.g. Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer.
  3. Tap a song link in WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal or any other messenger – your player starts the song, and a short notice shows which song was found.

The link preview card and the blue URL behave the same: both open the same address. WhatsApp hands links over to Android, so it usually works there straight away. If the source service's app is installed on your phone, its domain may be greyed out in the list – see the tip below.

Want to open an original link once? Pull down the quick settings and pause SongFlip with Smart Pause using its tile for 15 minutes, 1 hour or until morning. Links then open as usual – handy if a friend wants to show you their Spotify playlist in the Spotify app. Greyed-out domains are covered in fixing “Open by default” on Android.

Telegram: switch off the in-app browser

Telegram can open links in its own built-in browser. A link opened that way never reaches Android or iOS, so neither SongFlip nor any other app gets the chance to handle it – you end up on the service's web page.

  • In Telegram's settings, look for the In-App Browser option (on Android usually under Chat Settings) and turn it off. The exact location changes between Telegram versions.
  • Already stuck in the built-in browser? Use its menu to Open in browser or Share, and pick SongFlip.

iPhone: share the link from the chat

iOS doesn't allow SongFlip to take over links automatically, but in both messengers it only takes one extra tap:

  1. Install SongFlip (currently via TestFlight) and choose your player.
  2. In WhatsApp or Telegram, long-press the music link and choose Share.
  3. Select SongFlip – the song opens in your player.

If the menu doesn't offer Share, tap Copy instead and start the SongFlip shortcut via the Action Button or Siri – it reads the link from the clipboard.

Sending links that work for everyone in the group

Your own player is sorted – but your friends still get your Spotify or Apple Music link. Two options: convert the link in the web demo and paste the right one for each person, or share a SongFlip smart link (PRO). It opens in any browser, offers a 30-second preview and lets each person open the song in their own service – without installing SongFlip.

Frequently asked questions

No. SongFlip has no access to your chats and uses no accessibility permission. It only receives the single link you tap (Android) or share (iPhone).

Yes. Copy the link, paste it into the web demo and send back the Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, Deezer or Amazon Music link. With PRO you can share one smart link that suits everyone.

Most likely Telegram's in-app browser is on. Switch it off in Telegram's settings, or choose Open in browser / Share from its menu. On Android, also check that SongFlip is set for that domain under Open by default.

Yes. With apps that hand links to the system (like Signal, Discord, Slack or Reddit), it works directly with 0 taps. Apps with their own in-app browser (like Instagram or TikTok) sometimes keep the link to themselves – then simply use Open in browser or share the link to SongFlip.
